Dvořàk scrisse alcuni pezzi intitolati dumka, intendendo per essi una forma musicale malinconica di fondo, inframmezzata da sezioni serene, più leggere.
La parola dumka, dal verbo dumati, si ritrova in tutte le lingue slave e significa meditare, pensare, riflettere.
La Dumka è un canto popolare russo-slavo, una sorta di méditation narrativa di carattere elegiaco ed è il fulcro dell'Andante con moto, pagina sospesa tra pensosità e malinconia, del Quintetto op. 81 di cui fa parte. Composto nel 1887, risente dell’influsso delle teorie di Goethe e dei fratelli Grimm.
È anche una vera e propria forma poetica, ballata celebrativa di grandi eroi, sorta di canto epico che ricordava le gesta dei cosacchi alla conquista di pace e libertà.
Dvořàk wrote some pieces entitled dumka, meaning for them a melancholic background musical form, interspersed with serene, lighter sections. The word dumka, from the verb dumati, is found in all Slavic languages and means to meditate, think, reflect.
The Dumka is a Russian-Slavic popular song, a sort of narrative meditation of an elegiac nature and is the centre of the Andante with motion, a page suspended between thoughtfulness and melancholy, of the Quintet op. 81 of which it is part. Composed in 1887, it is influenced by the theories of Goethe and the Brothers Grimm.
It is also a real poetic form, a celebratory ballad of great heroes, a sort of epic song that recalled the deeds of the Cossacks in the conquest of peace and freedom.
