Labirinti

The labyrinth until the Renaissance was a structure in which we always got to the centre; later, with Mannerism, instead, the labyrinth becomes the place of loss, so there is a labyrinth that is closer to our sensitivity and that begins with Mannerism and Baroque. Chesterton said: we are what we all fear, a maze without a centre.

Jorge Luis Borges

The labyrinth is by definition a departure from the straight path, it is a tortuous path made of meanders, intersections, often also of deceptive forks, false tracks, deviations. As Borges observed, a building built to confuse men.

The univiary, that of the classic labyrinth of Cnossus, provides a single path, however tortuous, from the entrance to the centre and from the centre to the exit. If its structure could be unrolled, it would be identified with a single thread. In the multi-rail, all routes lead to one dead centre except one. You can make mistakes there, you are often forced to retrace your steps and try another path. If it were unrolled, it would not appear as a wire but as a tree with binary disjunctions, full of dead alleys.

According to Gilbert Lascault "The labyrinths suppose initiatory paths, disorientations, discoveries of oneself, identity and otherness found, love and sometimes violent encounters, fights, tenderness and cruelty, very often cunning, hunts, traps, ambushes, crossings, sometimes even childish hide-and-seek games, conspiracies, conspiracies, drifts, displacements. Those who enter a maze choose the drives and, simultaneously, a logic, the game and the mystique, the risks and the wisdom. It goes from one psychic place to another, from one emotional environment to another".

From July 10, fifteen years after its construction, it will again be possible to travel the 1,150 metres of paths of the Borges Labyrinth located on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Dedicated to the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, whose death this year is the fortieth anniversary of his death, the labyrinth represents a meeting point between architecture, literature, landscape and contemporary art. Created by the architect Randoll Coate, a great friend of the writer, it is inspired by the story The Garden of the Forking Paths (a huge riddle where the themes are the labyrinth, time, books) but the will to realise it where it stands now is of the widow of Jorge Luis Borges, María Kodama who sought a place that allowed it to be readability even from above and that licked a large historical library, and here is the Long Sleeve, one of the most important in Europe for art and humanistic studies.

Borges visited and loved the lagoon city coming to call it a city-labyrinth, where getting lost becomes one of the most fascinating and suggestive aspects of the experience. The labyrinth, as well as the narrow Venetian streets, thus become a metaphor for inner wandering, the flow of thoughts, with their circular movements, repetitions and small obsessions.
