COSÌ FAN TUTTI

 Mi trovavo sul Boulevard des Italiens -con le lampade elettriche bianche e i becchi a gas gialli- con migliaia di volti estranei che alla luce elettrica avevano l’aria di fantasmi.

Con queste parole Edvard Munch descriveva nei suoi diari personali il senso di vuoto e di smarrimento provocato durante un viaggio a Parigi nel 1889. Le impressioni suscitate dalle sue frequenti passeggiate notturne si trasformano nel 1892 in Sera sulla via Karl Johan, ambientato in una delle strade più rinomate di Oslo. Oggi conservata al museo di Bergen, il dipinto unisce il tema dell’alienazione mentale alla feroce critica antiborghese, trasformando l’innocuo rituale della passeggiata serale per le vie del centro in una lugubre marcia di morti viventi. La massa borghese amorfa e indefinita avanza compatta mentre l’artista si rappresenta di spalle mentre procede in direzione opposta. Il dipinto trasforma una passeggiata serale di una folla in un inquietante denuncia contro il conformismo sociale.

I was on the Boulevard des Italiens - with white electric lamps and yellow gas spouts - with thousands of strange faces that looked like ghosts in the electric light.

With these words Edvard Munch described in his personal diaries the sense of emptiness and bewilderment caused during a trip to Paris in 1889. The impressions aroused by his frequent night walks are transformed in 1892 into Evening on Karl Johan Street, set in one of the most famous streets in Oslo. Today preserved at the Bergen museum, the painting combines the theme of mental alienation with fierce anti-bourgeois criticism, transforming the harmless ritual of the evening walk through the streets of the centre into a gloomy march of the living dead. The amorphous and indefinite bourgeois mass advances compact while the artist represents himself from behind while proceeding in the opposite direction. The painting transforms an evening walk of a crowd into a disturbing denunciation against social conformism.
