Fremont è forse il film più semplice, essenziale, disadorno che abbia visto. Sicuramente un ottimo esempio di recente cinema indipendente.
Pur essendo un film drammatico è pervaso da una forte componente ironica, scene statiche dai silenzi divertenti, lodato dal Financial Times per la sua “impassibilità inaspettatamente comica”. Non a caso il Dr. Anthony, lo psicoterapeuta della protagonista, Donya, è interpretato da uno dei maestri americani del deadpan humor, Gregg Turkington. Ma sono la tristezza e la solitudine che permeano Fremont. E nonostante la profondità del tema trattato la storia è semplice e priva di azione. Racconta un momento della vita di Donya, ex traduttrice afghana, collaboratrice degli Stati Uniti, disprezzata per questo dalla sua famiglia, fuggita in America prima che i talebani tornassero al potere. A Fremont, in California, sede della più grande comunità afghano americana degli States, vive in un minuscolo monolocale dove ha iniziato a soffrire di insonnia vivendo circondata da un gruppo di afghani scappati dal regime e lavorando in una fabbrica di biscotti della fortuna dove compone enigmatici e ironici biglietti. Ad accompagnare il senso di malinconia del film c’è il leitmotiv Diamond Day, brano della cantautrice folk Vashti Bunyan, il cui stile musicale nostalgico e struggente fa sognare a Donya e all’amica Joanna una vita diversa da quella che stanno vivendo. Donya è alla disperata ricerca di rivalsa e di amore.

Fremont is perhaps the simplest, most essential, unadorned film I've ever seen. Definitely a great example of recent independent cinema. Despite being a drama film, it is pervaded by a strong ironic component, static scenes with funny silences, praised by the Financial Times for its "unexpectedly comical impassibility". It is no coincidence that Dr. Anthony, the protagonist's psychotherapist, Donya, is played by one of the American masters of deadpan humour, Gregg Turkington. But it is the sadness and loneliness that permeate Fremont. And despite the depth of the theme treated, the story is simple and actionless. It tells a moment in the life of Donya, a former Afghan translator, collaborator of the United States, despised for this by her family, who fled to America before the Taliban returned to power. In Fremont, California, home to the largest Afghan American community in the States, she lives in a tiny studio where she began to suffer from insomnia living surrounded by a group of Afghans who fled the regime and working in a fortune biscuit factory where she composes enigmatic and ironic notes. Accompanying the sense of melancholy of the film is the leitmotiv Diamond Day, a song by folk singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan, whose nostalgic and poignant musical style makes Donya and her friend Joanna dream of a life different from the one they are living. Donya is desperate for revenge and love.
